*** After several years of relative calm under a prior truce agreement, the Syrian government launched a scorched earth campaign against in Qaboun and its neighbor Barzeh in February 2017. The violence peaked by early May until the first armed opposition group surrendered to government forces, and was quietly transferred out of Qaboun on 5 May. A week later, a final surrender deal was reached for Qaboun, and after a series of forced population transfers, the neighborhood was emptied of its residents by late May. Pro-government forces took control and looted what remained of the neighborhood. Qaboun was briefly on the Siege Watch "Watchlist," but after the population transfers it was removed from project monitoring efforts. ***
